Nezu Shrine

Nezu shrine is a Shinto shrine located off a main street in Uneo, Tokyo. The shrine has a series of paths lined with Torii gates and Azalea’s. While the gates are as large as some of the other gates in Tokyo and Kyoto there are rarely any people here. If you are wanting to get that Instagram picture standing with a Torii gate, this is the shrine to checkout.

Japan is dotted with shrines almost like America is dotted with Starbucks. Finding a shrine is easy, finding a shrine without a lot of people and with more then a few Torii gates is hard, which is why I like this shrine.

You will need to walk to this shrine it is up a slight hill from the main road and tucked away out of site, but this just means that you’ll most likely only run into locals. An added bonus is that the main street is littered with restaurants and shops that you can peruse while walking to and from the subway station.

The Torii gates are on the smaller side so if you are taller then 5’8″ there is a good chance you will hit your head. Remember to duck while walking through them.

When to go

The shrine is open during the day. If you want to see the Azalea’s in bloom the peak is between early April and early May.

How to get there?

Nezu Shrine is located off of Shinobazu-dori ave. You can access it from Nezu, Sendagi, or Todaimae subway stations. It is also about a 25 minute walk from the south end of Ueno park.
